Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey Welcomes Trashaun Powell as New Member-at-Large on Board of Directors
The Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) is excited to announce the appointment of Trashaun Powell to our Board of Directors as a new Member-at-Large. With over twenty years of dedication to human fundamental rights, especially in the realm of State Government and Community-based organizations, Trashaun brings to the board a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to social equity and justice.
Having faced a near-death pregnancy experience herself, Trashaun has become a fervent advocate for equitable and quality maternal health for birthing people of color across the nation. As the Vice President of Programs at the New Jersey Family Planning League, Trashaun plays a pivotal role in ensuring access to quality reproductive and sexual health services for all New Jersey residents, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity regardless of identity, income, and/or insurance status.
Trashaun's advocacy is particularly centered around issues affecting women, with a special focus on Black Maternal Health. She has been an active voice in New Jersey, leveraging platforms like the National Preeclampsia Foundation’s “The Promise Walk” since 2013, through which she has raised over $25,000 for the cause. Trashaun is also a key member of the Preeclampsia Foundation’s Racial Disparities Taskforce and a Certified Patient Family Partner and Faculty with MoMMA’s Voices, where she uses her lived experiences to spearhead initiatives aimed at improving outcomes in the maternal mortality health crisis.
A proud New Jersey native, Trashaun earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Stockton University and a Master of Arts degree from Thomas Edison University. She is a distinguished member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and embodies the spirit of service and leadership as a dedicated Troop Leader within the Girl Scouts. Trashaun, along with her husband of over ten years, are proud parents to two energetic children, further enriching her connection and commitment to family and community values.
Trashaun Powell’s extensive background in advocating for fundamental human rights, coupled with her personal dedication to improving maternal health outcomes, makes her an invaluable addition to our Board of Directors, her passion, leadership, and commitment to social equity align perfectly with the mission of the Girl Scouts to build girls of courage, confidence, and character. We are thrilled to have her expertise and vision on our board.
