Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) is proud to recognize Sophia Xenakis, who has earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award for her outstanding project aimed at educating young children about type 1 diabetes. Through her project, Sophia has made a significant impact in raising awareness and understanding of the condition among young audiences.
Sophia's Gold Award project involved writing and illustrating a book titled I Love Someone with Type I, which is available for purchase on Amazon and Barnesandnoble.com. Her motivation for the project stemmed from personal experience, as she has a cousin and grandmother living with type 1 diabetes. Witnessing her cousin's discomfort when explaining her condition to peers inspired Sophia to take action.
To bring her project to life, Sophia conducted a classroom reading of her book to a kindergarten class, assessing the students' knowledge of type 1 diabetes before and after the reading. The positive feedback from the students and their increased understanding of the disease highlighted the effectiveness of her book.
Additionally, Sophia collaborated with a pharmaceutical representative who works with endocrinologists to recommend her book to newly diagnosed patients. Her project team also conducted community outreach to endocrinologists, emphasizing the importance of educating the peers of children with type 1 diabetes to improve their well-being and disease management.
Sophia’s project not only addresses an important health issue but also demonstrates the power of education in fostering empathy and support for those living with type 1 diabetes. Her book is also available for borrowing at some local libraries, further extending its reach and impact.
"Feeling connected and active in my community has always been important to me," said Sophia. "Being a Girl Scout gave me the opportunity to try adventurous activities, give back to my community, and form new friendships."
Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey congratulates Sophia on her remarkable achievement and her dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. Her project exemplifies the values of courage, confidence, and character that the Girl Scout Gold Award represents.
