Girl Scout Gold Award recipient Sophia Minassian has successfully bridged generations through her impactful project, “The Armenians of St. Gregory Armenian Church.” Inspired by her family’s deep roots within the Springfield, MA church and community, Sophia focused her project on creating a permanent historical archive for St. Gregory Armenian Church, honoring the legacy of Armenian families who settled in Springfield following the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
Sophia developed a digital history section for the church's website, meticulously documenting key moments from the 1934 groundbreaking through to today. Her project includes a timeline of the church’s milestones, detailed profiles of significant church leaders, and recipes and artifacts donated by long-standing members. Sophia also took steps to ensure the church community can continue building on her work. She created instructional templates for church members, making it easy to update the digital archive with new material, artifacts, and personal histories as they are collected.
Through her dedication, Sophia has preserved a rich heritage that otherwise faced the risk of being lost as younger generations moved away. Her work includes first-hand interviews with church elders, adding invaluable personal perspectives to this historical account. The digital archive also celebrates St. Gregory’s 90th anniversary, commemorating the contributions of Armenian immigrants to Springfield and underscoring the importance of community and cultural preservation.
Sophia’s project exemplifies the spirit of the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts, representing leadership and commitment to community improvement. Through this prestigious award, Girl Scouts develop sustainable projects addressing issues close to their hearts, cultivating lasting change and community engagement.
Congratulations to Sophia for her exceptional contribution to preserving her community’s history and for demonstrating the leadership qualities that Girl Scouts foster.
