Kathleen O'Brien’s Gold Award project focused on strengthening emergency preparedness in her community. In collaboration with Hillsborough Township's emergency services, Kathleen hosted workshops covering a range of emergency scenarios. She partnered with local police, fire departments, and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to raise awareness and teach residents crucial safety skills.
Kathleen’s project went beyond natural disasters. She organized CPR/First Aid certification classes for 25 participants and hosted a Hands-Only CPR Day at the Hillsborough YMCA, training an additional 68 people in life-saving techniques. Her work was inspired by the impact of Hurricane Ida in Hillsborough and Somerset County, where she saw firsthand the need for greater emergency preparedness.
"Girl Scouts means to try, and to keep trying," Kathleen reflected. Her journey through Girl Scouts, starting 13 years ago when she reluctantly joined, taught her the importance of trying new things, learning from challenges, and applying those lessons in meaningful ways.
Kathleen’s project will continue to have a lasting impact in her community. The Hillsborough OEM now has the resources to continue hosting workshops, and local health organizations have step-by-step guides to continue CPR training. Through her project, over 100 people are now better prepared for emergencies.
