Gianna Schembari’s Gold Award project, “Connecting Generations,” tackled the issue of limited youth volunteer engagement in nursing homes. Focusing on children in grades 5-8, Gianna partnered with the Stonebridge Nursing Home in Montgomery, a middle school volunteer club, and local Girl Scouts to create impactful volunteer opportunities. She hosted events and workshops to educate students, Girl Scouts, parents, and community leaders on the importance of connecting with senior citizens, highlighting how simple and fulfilling it can be to give back to this population.
Gianna’s inspiration stemmed from her long history of community service through Girl Scouts, where she spent time volunteering in nursing homes and forming connections with her great-grandmothers. Her passion for making a difference grew as she witnessed the joy she could bring to seniors. “Connecting Generations” ensured that students could continue to experience that same joy, forming bonds with the elderly through creative activities and direct interaction.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn. It requires girls to identify an issue in their community and create a sustainable solution. Through the Gold Award, Girl Scouts develop key leadership skills, leaving a lasting impact on their communities and beyond.
Gianna’s project is sustained through various initiatives. Her quarterly “Cards for Caring” program, supported by her Girl Scout Service Unit, continues to provide opportunities for youth to engage with seniors. Additionally, her partnership with the Interact Club at a local school ensures that volunteering at nursing homes remains an integral part of the club’s activities. Gianna’s project is also highlighted on the Montgomery district-wide webpage, allowing her legacy of community connection and support for senior citizens to continue long after her direct involvement.
