Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) proudly honors Gabrielle Minieri, who has earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award for her exceptional project focused on community gardening and education. Gabrielle's initiative, in partnership with Wagner Farm Arboretum (WFA) in Warren, NJ, has significantly expanded the arboretum's ability to educate and engage families with young children about gardening.
Gabrielle's project involved the design and construction of a new outdoor classroom at WFA, complete with a paved patio, two potting benches (one for younger children and one for older children or adults), and a covered kiosk featuring a blackboard and enclosed bulletin board. This new classroom is designed to enhance WFA’s educational outreach, particularly the Community Giving Garden, which provides fresh produce to local food banks.
In addition to the physical structures, Gabrielle developed curricula based on two Girl Scout badges: the Brownie Bug Badge and the Junior Flower Badge. These curricula, adaptable for non-scouting groups, offer comprehensive lessons on gardening and the importance of fresh produce. Gabrielle’s project culminated in an open house event in the spring of 2023 to raise community awareness about volunteer and educational opportunities at WFA.
Gabrielle’s dedication to combating childhood obesity and promoting access to healthy food is evident in her work. Having first volunteered at WFA in kindergarten, she has continually supported the arboretum and local food banks. Her Gold Award project aims to ensure that the educational benefits and community involvement at WFA continue to grow, providing lasting impact through sustainable structures and educational programs.
"Being a Girl Scout has taught me to be an active volunteer and advocate for positive change wherever I find myself," Gabrielle shared. "It is not just the acts of volunteerism, but the active recognition of where I can best help make the world a better place."
Gabrielle's project leaves a lasting legacy at WFA, with the classroom structures and educational programs set to benefit future generations. Her work underscores the importance of community collaboration in fostering a healthier, more connected society.
Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey congratulates Gabrielle on her remarkable achievement and her dedication to making a difference. Her project exemplifies the values of courage, confidence, and character that the Girl Scout Gold Award represents.
