The Girl Scouts Leadership Center (GSLC) in Newark is more than a building—it’s a testament to the power of community, imagination, and collaboration. This space is being thoughtfully shaped through an inclusive design process that amplifies the voices of members, volunteers, and stakeholders.
Located at 375 McCarter Highway, the 5,436-square-foot GSLC is destined to become a hub for inspiration, growth, and opportunity. Here’s how the community is collaborating to bring this landmark hallmark project to life.
Youth-Led Collaboration: Leadership Through Design
Eleven Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey members from across the council, along with adult volunteers are serving as Community Design Leaders. These participants are shaping a space that reflects Girl Scout creativity and values.
Meeting weekly, they have developed proposals ranging from murals celebrating Newark’s culture to designs embodying the Girl Scouts’ mission. A key focus has been ensuring the space is multifunctional, allowing multiple programs to take place simultaneously while also offering potential for event rentals. Their work highlights the transformative power of youth leadership and collaboration, helping to create a space where imagination and empowerment thrive.
Stakeholder Engagement: A Shared Vision
The design process embraces a community-informed approach, ensuring the GSLC reflects the aspirations of its future users. Through four Stakeholder Engagement Conversations, youth, families, troop leaders, community members, and local organizations have shared ideas, provided feedback, and shaped the center’s vision.
These conversations fostered a shared mission to empower youth and create lasting impact, envision features like welcoming entryways, dynamic programming, and spaces that authentically reflect the community’s identity.
Guided by Expertise: Partnering with Newark-Based HECTOR
HECTOR, a Newark-based architectural and planning consultancy, has played a pivotal role in the GSLC development. With expertise in community-centered design, HECTOR guided a programming study that asked critical questions, such as: How can the spaces best support Girl Scout programs? What design features will create a warm and inviting experience for all visitors, whether familiar with Newark or new to the city?
Hands-On Creativity: Turning Ideas into Reality
The GSLC design process has been both visionary and practical. Participants took ownership of the project, surveying the site and developing actionable plans for specific areas.
Key proposals include:
· Interior Features: Art and furnishings that reflect the values of the Girl Scouts and celebrate community pride.
· Murals and Signage: Collaboratively designed and created with local artists and community participants to celebrate Newark’s rich culture and reflect the center’s mission.
· Exterior Spaces: Welcoming entryways designed to create an inviting atmosphere and set the stage for an for an energizing experience.
These efforts showcase how a shared vision can transform a physical space into a vibrant hub of creativity, community, and connection.
A Beacon of Community Collaboration
The GSLC’s design process highlights the extraordinary outcomes of community collaboration. It’s not just about creating a building, it’s about fostering empowerment, leadership and teamwork. Every participant contributed to shaping a space that reflects the community’s heart and spirit.
As the GSLC prepares to open this spring, it stands as a testament to community-informed design. While some features will debut at the grand opening, others will unfold gradually as resources and partnerships continue to develop. The GSLC is not just a building—it’s a legacy in progress.
