Inspired by the devastating impact of Hurricane Ida, Claire Murphy’s Gold Award project focused on increasing education and awareness around flood safety in her community of Hillsborough. Claire created a comprehensive flood safety website, which is now linked to the Hillsborough Office of Emergency Management (OEM) page.
Working with local experts and officials, Claire developed educational materials and collaborated with real estate agents to distribute business cards with QR codes to her site, ensuring new homeowners could stay informed. To reach young drivers, Claire’s project also integrated a flood safety slideshow into the Driver's Education curriculum in Hillsborough. At local events such as the Green Living Health and Wellness Fair and the Hillsborough Rotary Fair, Claire shared her project and distributed over 100 window glass breakers to help drivers in emergency situations.
Reflecting on her experience, Claire shared that her inspiration came from witnessing the lack of awareness during Hurricane Ida, where many—including her family—ignored flood warnings, leading to tragic consequences. “To me, being a Girl Scout means empowerment, growth, and leadership,” Claire explained. “It’s about playing a critical role in aiding your community and having the opportunities to do so.”
Claire’s project will be sustained through its inclusion on the township and Hillsborough service unit websites. Additionally, her educational materials remain in the local Driver's Education curriculum, ensuring future generations benefit from her work.
