Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey honors International Day of the Girl with an inspiring community celebration at the Girl Scout Leadership Center in Newark.
Every year on October 11, Girl Scouts and people across the globe celebrate the power of girls on International Day of the Girl. On this day, we recognize and support girls’ strength and their ability to take action and make change.
This past Saturday, more than 40 members of the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey community celebrated International Day of the Girl at the Girl Scout Leadership Center in Newark with a powerful and inspiring day dedicated to uplifting Girl Scout voices through art, literature, and storytelling.
The event was joined by Assemblywoman and GSHNJ Board Member Linda S. Carter, State Senator Angela McKnight, and GSHNJ CEO Natasha Hemmings, who each participated in the celebration.
Girl Scouts created a “Filled with Words of Affirmation” group art installation, covering one side of the Leadership Center with their outlines and quotes. They then extended their voices in a storytelling circle with Newark Poet Laureate Margie “Mia X” Johnson, strengthened their speaking skills with TEDx speaker and Brown Kids Read founder Ssanyu Lukoma, had fun with Jump Kids Health, and engaged in a Guided Oriki activity inspired by the book Rising Troublemaker by Luvvie Ajayi Jones.
The celebration culminated with a SPEAK OUT!, where Girl Scouts presented their artistic expressions—reminding everyone of the power of their voices and their ability to create change.
