Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey proudly recognizes Caroline Heinze for her impactful Gold Award project aimed at mitigating the national blood shortage. Caroline’s initiative at Mount St. Mary Academy involved creating an educational curriculum on blood health and donations, organizing an American Red Cross Blood Drive, and measuring the effectiveness of her efforts through pre- and post-surveys.
Caroline’s inspiration for the project came from a personal experience—her cousin’s need for a blood transfusion while serving overseas in the military. Recognizing the critical importance of blood donations, Caroline was determined to raise awareness and encourage action among her peers.
"My high school always encourages us to think broadly about how we can give back to the community. It was a natural fit for me to want to contribute in a meaningful way to the blood shortage issue," Caroline explained.
Caroline’s project included leading a team of students to develop a comprehensive curriculum module on blood health and donations. She also organized and hosted a successful blood drive at her school, incorporating educational marketing materials and lunchtime activities to promote participation. The effectiveness of these educational interventions was measured through pre- and post-surveys, demonstrating the positive impact of the initiative.
"Girl Scouts has been a passion for me since I started as a 5-year-old Daisy. It’s the very definition of how you make an impact on your community," said Caroline. "I plan to use all the skills that I acquired over my 13 years as a Girl Scout to continue to make an impact in college."
The sustainability of Caroline’s project is ensured by the commitment of younger students at Mount St. Mary Academy, who plan to continue hosting the blood drive annually. The curriculum module she created is now a permanent part of the school’s educational resources, and future blood drives will benefit from the established marketing materials and promotional activities.
Caroline’s efforts have not only contributed to addressing the blood shortage but have also instilled a sense of community service and awareness in her peers.
Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey congratulates Caroline Heinze on her outstanding achievement and her dedication to making a difference in her community.
