Enjoy Turtle Back Zoo's Holiday Lights with your fellow Girl Scouts while also getting a jump start on earning your Winter Outdoor Challenge Patch! Take a winter stroll under the sparkling lights of 50 winter and animal characters, warm your insides with hot chocolate from the Savannah Cafe, and enjoy some hands-on fun in our private GSHNJ activity pavilion. Each registered youth will receive a 2025 Turtle Back Zoo fun patch, a hot chocolate voucher, activity sheets (including the Winter Outdoor Challenge), and a glow necklace for entrance into our special GSHNJ Activity Pavilion. Our private pavilion (open from 5-7:00pm) will feature a selection of fun drop-in activities exploring various Girl Scout badges and our friendly 2025 cookie mascot...the Ferret! Girl Scouts are encouraged to celebrate the season by donating an item of non-perishable food, new toy and/or gently used coat at the zoo entrance (see listing below for troop service opportunities in November and December helping with donation collection).

Additional Details:

  • The "cost" of admission during the Holiday Lights season is one of the suggested donations listed above.  Your program fees cover our exclusive GSHNJ activities and pavilion, program materials, fun patch, glow necklaces, and hot chocolate voucher.
  • Looking for a troop service opportunity? Groups of 4-8 Girl Scouts (4th grade and up) and at least 2 adults can reserve a two-hour evening shift between November 29th - December 31st to volunteer at the zoo entrance and help collect donated goods. For more information about this service opportunity, email kdurr@parks.essexcountynj.org.
  • Badges supported in part by GSHNJ activities include the Brownie Bugs Badge (all steps), Junior Animal Habitats badge (Steps 1-4), and the Cadette Night Owl badge (Steps 1-4). Badges are not included; for additional badge information, see Volunteer Tool Kit or Girl Scout Badge Explorer.

All Girl Scout participants must be chaperoned at this program by their Troop Leaders/Adult volunteers or by a guardian, but those adults do not need to register for this program.
