The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) provides materials for our STEM Kit lending library. These materials will help to grow STEM literacy and interest for Girl Scout troops. The instructional materials may be borrowed, free of charge, to help you teach your girls important STEM concepts and skill sets. These kits are ideal for troops of up to 20 girls in the Brownie, Junior and Cadette grade levels. Below are the descriptions for the two kits that will be offered beginning January 2022. Troop leaders are invited to attend this special interest session to learn more and hear from the professionals at IEEE.
# 1- Intro to Circuits Kit
Troops will learn about circuit
parts, including switch, transistor, LED and IC. They will then make a
simple LED flashlight and then a “follow the light” game, similar to
the classic game “Simon”, all while building a variety of skills that
are needed for careers in the STEM field. This activity completes
several steps for the STEM Career Exploration and Brownie Inventor badges.
#2 - Intro to Programming
In this workshop, troops will learn
about programming and logic while they construct a logic sequence to
get a robot through a maze. They will also compare/race the code they
created against the robot using self-driving avoidance. This activity
completes requirements for the Robotics I – Programming Robots and
STEM Career Exploration badges.
