Community Programs

GSHNJ is committed to serving all girls in our service area and has established two community outreach programs that are inclusive of girls who may have had barriers to participation. Girls Scouts Beyond Bars and Juliette's House makes the Girl Scout Leadership Experience available to girls with unique needs or those who ordinarily wouldn’t have access to the traditional troop experience. Both programs offer vulnerable girls the opportunity to find stabilizing support from relationships with peers and adults who understand their family relationships and home life.

Girl Scouts Beyond Bars

gives girls the chance to bond with close family members incarcerated at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility, the only women’s prison in New Jersey. Our goal is to help decrease the impact of parental separation. Through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience we help nurture, and in some cases re-establish familial relationships, as well as help girls connect with one another for peer support. Girls enjoy traditional Girl Scout experiences during weekly troop meetings in their community. Monthly troop meetings take place at the prison, using a specialized curriculum that empowers both the girls and their incarcerated family members to make positive decisions about their future.

Juliette's House

Juliette's House is dedicated to serving women and girls who are experiencing homelessness. It instills a sense of sisterhood and stability to those living in unstable housing situations. Meetings take place in shelters and transitional housing facilities across our service area. To accommodate the mobility of the girls and their families, the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is delivered in a condensed format. Once families find permanent housing, membership can be transferred to a local troop or girls can attend meetings with any Juliette's House in our service area.
