In February, Emelia learned that an immigrant family in Northern New Jersey (Bergen County) lost everything except the clothes on their back due to a fire.  The mom and dad and three young children under the age of 7 barely escaped.  The mom was 38 weeks pregnant.  Through a friend-of-a-friend of Emelia’s mother she was able to contact the family and tell them she wanted to collect baby items for them.  She jumped into action, contacting leaders in her Service Unit, her troop, her church group and friends and family letting them know she was going to throw a baby shower.

In less than three weeks she collected everything a new mom and baby would need – blankets, bath items, diapers, wipes, clothing, pacifiers, play sets and even a cradle with bedding.  In addition, one contact that works at Nickelodeon donated clothing, blankets, backpacks and toys for the older children!  Everything was wrapped up and delivered to the family in March to their new home.  They had no idea what to expect and were beyond grateful at the outpouring of support from strangers who lived across the state.

This project was truly a Labor of Love (pun intended!) and was an extension of Emelia’s Silver Award project – Random Acts of Kindness - which she earned last year.

Emelia is a Freshman at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, NJ.  She is an honor roll student, and a member of the Cross Country and Track teams.  She has been scouting since she was in kindergarten and is starting work on her Gold Award.
