Victoria Foundation Grants $75,000 to Support Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey Programs in Newark
Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) is honored to receive a $75,000 grant – $10,000 of which is a challenge grant to help diversify and broaden GSHNJ’s funding base from longtime supporter, Victoria Foundation. The grant will help sustain signature Girl Scout leadership programs in Newark including troops, public housing, summer BLAST!, LEAD ON! and outreach programs.
“Victoria Foundation is proud to have supported Girl Scouts for more than half a century! Today, Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey is a fine organization with strong leadership and a committed presence in Newark, where it serves more than 1,200 girls annually. Our $10,000 challenge grant will enable GSHNJ to attract even more support to this important work with urban girls,” says Irene Cooper-Basch, Executive Officer, Victoria Foundation.
The Girl Scout experience helps girls realize their dreams and become tomorrow's leaders. Delivering Girl Scout programming at the community level ensures that girls grow into active and engaged members of their communities and develop their full potential in their chosen fields.
“Victoria Foundation and GSHNJ share a strong dedication to developing leadership skills in girls in the Newark community. We know when girls succeed, a community succeeds,” says Susan M. Brooks, CEO Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey.
The programs supported by Victoria Foundation grant include:
- LEAD ON! GSHNJ’s Lead On! Program is designed to continue to reinforce leadership skills in girls ages 16-17, provide positive role models for younger girls and strengthen social networks. Facilitators for this program are motivated high school girls who want to give back to their communities. Topics of discussion include resume writing, leadership skills, corporate/social responsibility, interview skills, teamwork and college access.
- Summer BLAST!
GSHNJ recognizes the importance of year round learning for girls across our council. In order to avoid the “summer slide,” and to stay relevant to girls, GSHNJ created the BLAST! (Becoming Leaders and Acquiring Skills Together) Summer Program.
Summer BLAST! runs for six consecutive weeks from end of June through mid-August. Through Summer BLAST!, GSHNJ collaborates with established organizational and program partners to offer free supplemental enrichment instruction for girls. In 2012, Summer BLAST! took place at 17 schools and community organizations. GSHNJ program and membership staff facilitates BLAST! curriculum at each location for 2-3 hours per day, typically once a week, for a minimum of 12 hours of programming. Program components fall under one of GSHNJ’s 5 strategic program platforms: Financial Literacy, Arts and Culture, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Health and Fitness and Community Service and Advocacy.
About Victoria Foundation

In the 1970’s, a second priority was initiated to protect the environment throughout the state of New Jersey.
